Once Upon a Book Club is ending its Young Adult box after 10 years and more than 250 titles across its two monthly boxes. Starting with the January 2027 box, Adult becomes the Fiction Box and Young Adult is replaced by a new Fantastical Box built around adult fantasy and sci-fi. The price stays at $49.99 a month plus shipping.
What’s Changing at Once Upon a Book Club
The book subscription announced the change on its blog on October 21, 2026. Each box still sends a new release plus wrapped gifts you open when you reach specific pages, but the genres are now spelled out:
- Fiction Box (replaces Adult): newly released adult novels in historical fiction, thriller, contemporary, mystery and romance
- Fantastical Box (replaces Young Adult): newly released adult novels in fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, magical realism and paranormal romance

What Changes for Subscribers
- Nothing to do: Adult subscribers move to the Fiction Box and Young Adult subscribers move to the Fantastical Box automatically on December 15, 2026, when the first hints come out.
- Same price: $49.99 a month plus shipping, unchanged.
- Same calendar: each month’s box is on sale from the 15th to the 14th of the next month and ships at the end of the month. The first Fiction and Fantastical boxes ship at the end of January 2027.
Our Take
The real story is the end of the YA box. Young Adult subscribers are moved into a box of adult novels, so this is not a like-for-like swap. If you subscribe for a teen reader, check the January hints on December 15 before your renewal, and cancel if adult fantasy isn’t a fit. For adult readers, the change is a plus: knowing whether you’ll get a thriller or a fantasy novel removes the biggest gamble of a mystery book box.
