Chewy has changed its Chewy+ paid membership: it now costs $59 a year after a 30-day free trial, down from $79, but rewards are smaller for many members. Under Chewy’s new terms, dated October 5, 2026, rewards are capped at $100 a year and many purchases now earn 2% back instead of 5%. Existing members get the new terms when they renew after November 4, 2026.
What’s changing with Chewy+?
We compared Chewy’s two sets of Chewy+ terms, both posted on chewy.com:
- Price: $59 a year after a 30-day free trial, according to Chewy’s membership page. Chewy announced the cut from $79 on October 7.
- Rewards rate: under the previous terms, members earned 5% back on every eligible purchase. Now it’s 5% on dog and cat food and on health and pharmacy items, and 2% on veterinary diets and everything else.
- Rewards cap: previously, rewards were earned on up to $3,000 of purchases a year (so up to $150 at 5%). Now the maximum is $100 in rewards per membership year.
- Who and when: the new terms apply to memberships started after October 5, 2026 and to renewals after November 4, 2026.
Chewy+ still includes free shipping on every order with no minimum, free trial-size samples, one free virtual vet visit a year plus 10% off later visits, and free access to the 24/7 Pet Poison Helpline, according to Chewy.
Who wins and who loses?
It depends on what and how much you buy. Some quick math (ours), assuming you redeem all your rewards:
- Light shopper, mostly food: $1,000 a year on dog or cat food earns $50 back under both versions, and you now pay $20 less for the membership. You come out ahead.
- Toys, litter and supplies: $1,000 a year on “everything else” earned $50 before but $20 now. Even with the $20 lower fee, that’s $10 less net value.
- Heavy shopper: $3,000 a year on food earned the $150 maximum before; now it stops at $100. Net of the cheaper fee, that’s $30 less.
If you mainly use Chewy for Autoship food deliveries and spend under $2,000 a year on food and pharmacy, the new Chewy+ is a better deal. If you buy lots of supplies, or spend more than $2,000 a year, it’s worth checking your numbers before your renewal date.
Our take
This is a classic membership reprice: a lower, easier-to-sell headline price, paid for by trimming rewards for the biggest and broadest spenders. Free shipping with no minimum remains the main reason to join for most pet owners. Check your renewal date in your Chewy account: if it falls after November 4, the new rules apply to you.
